In celebration of Women’s History Month, Seneca Middle School students took part in an inspiring project led by Ms. Rose, a physical education teacher, and Ms. Estevez Creedon, the school librarian. The project encouraged students to research the incredible achievements of female athletes who have made a lasting impact on the world of sports.

Working in the school library, students explored the challenges and triumphs of these trailblazing women, gaining a deeper understanding of their contributions to athletics. This hands-on learning experience not only highlighted important historical figures but also motivated students to appreciate the perseverance and dedication of women in sports.

Seneca Middle School students came together in an inspiring show of support for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, shaving their heads to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. Organized by dedicated social worker Sarah Orlando, the event was a powerful display of community, compassion and courage.

With every buzz of the clippers, students demonstrated their solidarity with children battling cancer, proving that even small acts of bravery can make a big impact. Through their dedication, Seneca raised over $7,000 to support critical research efforts.

This event not only highlighted the generosity of the Seneca community but also reinforced the importance of standing together for a meaningful cause. A huge thank you to all the participants, donors and organizers for making this fundraiser a success!

Seneca Middle School recently held a fun and charitable St. Baldrick’s Pajama Breakfast, bringing students together for a great cause. Dressed in cozy pajamas, students enjoyed a delicious breakfast featuring a variety of cereals, bagels and juice while spending time with friends.

Beyond the fun, the event had a meaningful impact – raising over $1,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research. The successful fundraiser showcased the generosity and community spirit of Seneca Middle School students, making a difference one breakfast at a time!

Students at Seneca Middle School had a special opportunity to delve into the world of writing through a virtual author visit with Beth Anderson. Organized by teacher librarian Amelia Estevez Creedon, this engaging session allowed sixth grade students to explore the creative process of an acclaimed author.

During the visit, Anderson provided an inside look at how she brainstorms ideas, conducts thorough research and crafts compelling stories. She shared details about her day-to-day experiences as a writer, offering valuable insights that inspired students to tap into their own creativity and storytelling potential.

Beth Anderson, known for her celebrated works such as “Lizzie Demands a Seat!”, An Inconvenient Alphabet: Ben Franklin & Noah Webster's Spelling Revolution,” and Cloaked in Courage: Uncovering Deborah Sampson, Patriot Soldier spoke passionately about the process of bringing historical figures and imaginative narratives to life. Her ability to weave research with storytelling fascinated the students, leaving them eager to explore their own writing journeys.

The virtual session was an enriching experience that not only deepened students’ understanding of the writing process but also encouraged them to think critically about storytelling. Many students left the session feeling motivated to experiment with their own ideas and embrace the power of words.

Through this meaningful connection with Beth Anderson, Seneca Middle School students gained a new appreciation for literature and the art of writing, making this virtual author visit a memorable and inspiring event.

A day of love and kindness was sprinkled with some fun activities at Seneca Middle School on Feb. 14. In addition to a game show and visit by the talented and entertaining juggler Jester Jim, a story arts assembly that featured face painting took place at the end of the day. 

Painter and storyteller Christopher Agostino presented a performance piece that was storytelling combined with the exploration of the cultural traditions of masks and body art. Mr. Agostino had several student volunteers join him on stage as he shared a story, engaging the audience with animated folktales and adventure tales of world culture and humanity. As he told his stories, the audience did not see what he was painting on the students’ faces. When his story ended, he revealed his masterpieces to them to great applause.

Teacher librarian Amelia Estevez Creedon lauded the events of Senecon, the school’s annual tradition before the winter break that celebrates literacy, the arts and hands-on learning. Its purpose is to encourage students to connect with the works of authors, illustrators, musicians, storytellers and artists.
